CANARY ISLANDS - HIRE A CAR

☑️ Rent a car is the best way to visit the Canaries. You can get a quote, in 30 seconds, from all the suppliers present in the various airports and main cities.

Let's talk about prices to hire a car in the Canaries (Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura).

The average weekly rent for renting a car in the Canary Islands is around € 100. If you book in a very requested period (such as August or in the peak season) the prices increase.

In the image below, I'm in line to get on the Timanfaya in Lanzarote (tip: go very early in the morning, just opened, to avoid the lines I found in the afternoon).

Tenerife by car

Except for the very first trip, in which I had to rent a car on the spot because I had no credit card (paying much more even 30 euros a day), then I always booked the car online.

A tip: choose a snappy car, or 4x4, if you want to see the whole island especially the villages perched in the south-west area and the volcano: it is very hilly and at times there are very steep roads in the smaller countries towards the Teide.
To see the capital: Santa Cruz de Tenerife you can take the local bus or go by car using the convenient free highway.

Car hire Gran Canaria

Over the years, thanks to my many trips to the island, I have been able to test different car rental companies and, in my experience, in Gran Canaria I prefer Europcar and its cheaper subbrands: Interrent and Keddy (same counter) Hertz and its economic sub-brand: Thrifty as well as the TopCar

Reason: good communication, fast practices, employees present at the withdrawal of the vehicle and beautiful cars.

In the image below, I was picking up the car in a parking lot near where I landed at Las Palmas airport. On this trip I rented a Volkswagen UP.

The other car rental companies I tried but I didn't like for lack of reporting of damages on the contract and bad communication with the employee are: the Avis of Gran Canaria and its sub-brand Budget, the Gold Car of Gran Canaria and its sub-brand Rhodium car.

Car hire Lanzarote

Exploring Lanzarote by car is a MUST. Hire a Car is convenient and the island is perfect to visit driving. Forget the traffic of London, Rome...: driving on these roads is liberating as you can see in the image below (a dream!).

The only thing you have to pay attention are cyclists (many in Lanzarote) who do not use a normal bicycle but one in which they are lying horizontally (easier to invest πŸ˜…)

Personally, I avoid the Gold Car here too (aggressive sale of extra products and long lines to desk...). Recently I used the Top Car in Lanzarote  and it was good for me. On this trip I drove a Fiat 500.
Below, a photo during the tour to the playas de Papagayo (unpaved road, get an extra insurance for tire damage, the clerk will propose it).

Car hire Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura by car:  here too I chose the Top Car which, lately, has become my favorite company for various reasons: courteous, fast, beautiful cars, low cost and no deposit, no aggressive sales.
I highly recommend that you rent a car for your holiday in Fuerteventura to see it easily from North to South (the island is narrow but rather long), most of the roads will be like the one you see below.
They awaken the Schumacher that is in me that I repress in the city traffic!
