Fuerteventura holiday: looking for a place that isn't too windy for kids

Hey Moira, I'm looking for some advice and hoping you will have some time to help. I'm travelling from England to Fuerteventura in February. We haven't been there before, so now on a search to find somewhere suitable to stay. The main issue is we will be travelling with a 5 month old baby and 2 boys.

I'm looking for a beach that isn't too windy for the baby. I don't know if it will be cold or not in February but cold plus wind won't be ideal with 2 kids and a baby so just looking for some advice on where is best to go (which town/beach and if you know anyone with any accommodation that is close to the beach and near some food places that would be amazing).

I read your blog about finding places with walls around pools so not sure what is ideal and hoping you have some contacts/experience so we can find something.

The boys are quite energetic, love swimming and sandy beaches and exploring so if you have a place in your mind that's like that I would love to hear from you. I hope you can spare some time to share your thoughts.

Thank you!

Fuerteventura where is best to go with kids?

I receive several emails like this (I also have an Italian blog). If you face the same situation, here is my thoughts and advice about it.

Is February a good time to visit Fuerteventura?

Fuerteventura is not the island I would choose for a February stay in the Canaries with children. Definitely better to go to Gran Canaria southern zone: Puerto Rico/playa Amadores area (videos about these beaches).

However, since you've already booked your flight, it's better if you're staying in Caleta de Fuste.(see photo).
Fuerteventura is windy, the climate is very variable and the last time I was in Fuerte, in late January, I never swam but I got a tan lying under the fence that surrounds the beach of Caleta de fuste.

WHICH IS THE HOTTEST CANARY ISLANDS IN NOVEMBER

No doubt. The hottest canary island in november is Gran Canaria.
If I want to spend a warm winter I'll go in my apartment in Gran Canaria, in Puerto Rico. The villages located in the municipality of Mogan are the hottest places in november, december, january and february.

IS LAS PALMAS WORTH VISITING?

Yes it is. Last Palmas worth a visit. I recommend staying a few days in Las Palmas in February during the famous Spanish carnival. The city comes alive with parties, allegorical floats, music on the streets and it is pleasant to be part of it.

  1. Las Palmas is a cosmopolitan city, there is a university and many Europeans come for Erasmus. A lot of North Europeans retired people live in Las Palmas and it is a good base for digital nomads.
  2. Plenty of shops, restaurants, clubs... The main street of Las Palmas is "Calle Triana". It is a lively place.
  3. The 2½-mile Playa de las Canteras — is an attractive urban shoreline.
  4. The old town is very interesting, by the Cathedral and very enjoyable.

Is the SOUTH of GRAN CANARIA WARMER than the north?

No doubt. The South of Gran Canaria is warmer than the Northern part.
In the south, the climate remains consistently warm even in winter.

Gran Canaria where to stay

Which part of Gran Canaria has the best weather?

The South West resorts of Gran Canaria, like Puerto Rico, Anfi del Mar, Puerto de Mogan, Taurito... are sheltered from the prevailing northerly wind and thus are usually the warmest.
The best part where to stay in Gran Canaria especially in winter is Puerto Rico: one of the most popular seaside resorts on the island.
The temperatures during the day in winter are between 20°C and 25°C, you can sunbathe comfortably and work on your tan.

Listed below you can see the offers for accommodation in the less windy area of Gran Canaria. Prices for 7 nights, per accommodation, NOT per person.

Gran canaria north or south?

If suggest you to stay in Gran Canaria northern part only in summer or in february (carnival time). You can stay in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: the capital of the island.

I suggest staying in this cosmopolitan city in the summer months which enjoy a stable climate while in winter it is more cloudy and rainy than in the southern resorts. The prevailing wind is from the North East, so often rain heavy clouds will empty on the North of the island while the southern tip stays bathed in sunshine.

It is also very touristy but if you are looking for the classic seaside resort in which to spend the winter months, it is better to stay in the sunniest area: in Puerto Rico.

is the south of gran canaria warmer?

Las Canteras, the beach of Palmas, is more windy. Swimming is possible but the water is colder and the ocean is more wavy compared to the sheltered beaches of the South.

WHAT TO SEE IN LANZAROTE? Things to visit 🌴

Here the list of the most visited attractions in Lanzarote:

    what to see in lanzarote

Thank you if you use my links to book your holidays in the Canary Islands.

    LANZAROTE TOP ATTRACTIONS

Lanzarote is an island that I love very much for its Nature and inusual attractions. So this is my list of best things to see in Lanzarote:

Lanzarote, like the other Canaries, is an island that is totally focused on tourism, but it has not lost its cultural heritage, and has known how to promote environmental protection thanks also to CΓ©sar Manrique.

Go to Lanzarote if you love: lunar landscapes, deserts, white houses and vegetation.

    things to see in Lanzarote

If you like any type of marine sports activity, this is your place, but also if you are about beaches and relaxation. And it is that more than two million tourists visit Lanzarote every year , being the high season from December to February , when the weather in the rest of Europe is wintry, here they enjoy an eternal spring.

    Puerto del Carmen

The largest tourist center on the island of Lanzarote, is a group of apartments, buildings, restaurants, bordering the sea and several beaches, for the enjoyment of the tourists. Here we have discos, pubs and lounge bars on Avenida de las Playas, where you can stay if you looking for nightlife.

It is worth visiting it at sunset, and ending up having dinner in one of its many restaurants.
    LANZAROTE THINGS TO VISIT

    Playa Grande

The largest beach in Puerto del Carmen is a stretch of golden sand of more than a kilometer full of umbrellas and sunbeds.
    Very busy in high season.

    Lanzarote best accommodations

    Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca is a Lanzarote town belonging to the municipality of Yaiza. It is oriented towards the neighboring island of Fuerteventura. It is the area of Lanzarote where the highest temperatures tend to occur. The favorable climatic conditions make Playa Blanca one of the main places to take holidays in the winter period, in Lanzarote.

    Thins to visit in Lanzarote

    Mirador del Rio

At the top of the Risco de Famara, very close to the northern tip of Lanzarote, we can enjoy the panoramic viewpoint created by CΓ©sar Manrique.

    Things To Do In Lanzarote

From this beautiful vantage point we can contemplate one of the most beautiful landscapes of Lanzarote, with a privileged view of the El Rio Strait and the Chinijo archipelago, with the nearby island of La Graciosa. To which we add the careful architecture of the viewpoint, and it is that only the building is well worth the visit of this place. It is one of the classic visits to see in Lanzarote.

    Cueva de los Verdes

Attratcions in Lanzarote for those who love to deep in the heart of the earth (not suitable for claustrophobics.

One of the most incredible natural landscapes on the island and one of the essentials in our nature section to see in Lanzarote. This cave open to visitors, has its volcanic origin, when between 3000 and 5000 years ago, the La Corona volcano erupted.

The layer of lava formed a series of tunnels and caves of which a small part can be visited.

    Haria

This rural house surrounded by a palm grove, was designed by CΓ©sar Manrique combining with great taste.
This traditional town located in a valley, houses the House Museum of the artist Cesar Manrique. For those who want to know more about the artist, they can visit what was his home until the last day of his life.

The museum introduces us to CΓ©sar Manrique through more than 1,500 objects , among which there are works of art, work tools, unfinished works...

    Teguise

Teguise is one of the oldest towns on the island and is considered one of the most beautiful in the interior of Lanzarote. Founded in the early 13th century, its quiet, white streets convey peace if we visit it on a daily basis.

On Sunday mornings a market is held in Plaza Clavijo and Fajardo where you can find attractive craft stalls.

    Castle of Santa Barbara (Teguise)

This 16th century fortress - museum, dominates the citizens of the nearby town of Teguise from the heights of the Guanapay Mountain.

Inside there is an ethnological museum that tells the story of the canaries who emigrated to the American continent centuries ago.

The views of the valley and Teguise are well worth a visit to this place.

    Jameos del Agua

A cave that hides a cenote. Gorgeous!

This is one of his masterpieces to see in Lanzarote, my prefer. In 1966 the artist decided to promote the volcanic landscapes of the island, and created a set that mixes the union of natural space with his great architectural taste. In it there is an underground garden, restaurants, a museum, an auditorium and a beautiful swimming pool.
Best Things To Do in Lanzarote

    Salinas de Janubio

Long ago when the salt industry was of great importance in the Canary Islands, the salt flats were another part of the landscape of the islands. Currently, the Salinas de Janubio are the last salt flat in the archipelago , and it offers us a landscape of colors and geometric shapes.

    Los Hervideros

To the south of Timanfaya and near the road that goes to El Golfo from the Salinas de Janubio, Los Hervideros are located , a natural formation of volcanic inlets and vents , formed of petrified volcanic lava . If the sea is strong, the spectacle is greater.
    What's Lanzarote famous for

    Timanfaya National Park

It could be said that the most impressive natural visit to see in Lanzarote is that of the Timanfaya National Park.

This “ Martian ” landscape was formed between 1730 and 1736 with the volcanic eruptions that occurred on the island and that transformed the landscape from east to west . Today the volcanoes are inactive, but the soil in some areas emanates a lot of heat and therefore visits must be done guided.

    What is good about Lanzarote

    Famara beach

A small town (Caleta de Famara) that lives by and for water sports. Shops and schools everywhere fill its streets along with bars.

Famara beach is said that it is the most beautiful beach in Lanzarote. And this is so for two reasons: because of the mountain in the background as if it were a beautiful theater curtain. And because of the sunlight, which makes one of the best times to visit it at sunset.

    tourist attraction in Lanzarote

As a beach it is not one of the quietest to enjoy an afternoon with an umbrella and a towel, since the strong winds and the force of the sea make it more appropriate for water sports such as kitesurfing.

    Costa Teguise

This tourist town designed in 1970 to house the tourism with the highest purchasing power, is the perfect place to take a walk around its Pueblo Marinero (designed by CΓ©sar Manrique) and enjoy the dozens of places to dine and have a drink.
Much less "crowded" and quieter than Playa del Carmen, the restaurants and streets of Costa Teguise have the charm of minimalist design and good taste for simplicity, but without losing the animation of the good leisure areas.

There are markets that are organized one day of the week. When we went in June it was Wednesday and there was a lot of atmosphere.

    top attractions lanzarote

You can also enjoy Playa de las Cucharas, which although its waters are very calm, the wind blows a lot.

Costa Teguise is much quieter than nearby Puerto del Carmen, it also has a great selection of restaurants, bars and pubs.

Playa Blanca : If our budget is higher , we can visit the Puerto Deportivo Marina RubicΓ³n . Exclusive bars and restaurants for those who want a more cachet nightlife.

Arrecife : it is the perfect place if what you want is to know the local tastes when going out. There are places for all ages and this animated by all kinds of musical styles .

    Cactus Garden

Created by CΓ©sar Marique, it is a mixture of a Zen garden with a sculptural museum, all made with hundreds of species of cactus, both indigenous to the Canary Islands, as well as America and Africa.

We can also visit a restored traditional windmill inside.
unusual things to do in lanzarote

    Papagayo Beach

Perhaps the most famous of the Ajaches beaches is Playa Papagayo, a small cove surrounded by cliffs and with turquoise blue waters.

places to visit in lanzarote by car

It has several services such as parking and a small restaurant.

To get to all these beaches that we have told you about, we will have to walk along sandy paths that start from the car parks, but they are well equipped.

    Charco de los Clicos

Next to the town of El Golfo, the Charco de los Clicos is one of the images to see in Lanzarote.

This small green lagoon, separated from the Atlantic by a beautiful black beach, can be enjoyed from the viewpoint in the town of El Golfo.

places to drive to in lanzarote

    El Golfo

To the west of the Timanfaya National Park is the small town of El Golfo.

It is a fishing village with many restaurants to enjoy the varieties of delicacies that the sea delights us with, and an ideal stop to eat if we come to see the Timanfaya National Park.
If we do it at sunset, we can also enjoy the sunset .smile

It gave us time to relax, visit everything we have told you, and above all bring us a very good taste of this wonderful island.

Do NOT go to Lanzarote in winter season if:

      - You are looking for a lively nightlife (Better Tenerife).

WHICH IS THE HOTTEST CANARY ISLAND IN FEBRUARY?

Gran Canaria is the hottest Canary island in February. There were 30 degrees last february, when I went to Puerto Rico (a village located in the warmest part of Gran canaria in winter).
        best canary island in february

        Hottest canary island in february

The hottest Canary islands in February perfect for a beach holiday are Tenerife, southern part and Gran Canaria, Southwest area.

Spend a warm holiday in Tenerife or Gran Canaria is cheap. These islands are easy to reach by frequent low cost air flights company like Ryanair. Fair prices.
In general, the Canary Islands have a mild climate all year around but not all the 7 spanish islands are so warm.

For those who want to spend the winter months at the beach, sunbathing, I would exclude, for climatic reasons, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote: in this islands is better to go in summer-spring.

HOTTEST CANARY ISLAND in February| Gran Canaria

The best area to spend New Year in Gran Canaria and the winter months is in the southwestern towns of the island: due to its geography, this area remains protected by strong winds. For this reason it is the warmer and the sunniest canary islands.

        hottest canary island in february
        Puerto Rico Beach in february

I have a holiday apartment in Gran Canaria so... if you are looking for a hotel or apartment for Christmas in the Puerto Rico, Arguineguin or Playa de Amadores area, I advise you to book early.

This advice should not be considered during the "Covid" months, when the flow of tourism is reduced. Indeed, traveling to the Canaries, at this time, is quite cheap and the beaches are not as crowded as usual.

Usually, it is quit difficult to find cheap apartments "last second" in New Year's Eve" in the hottest part of Gran Canaria because half of European people is wintering here.

So if you have not booked in advance and you are at the last minute wanting to organize a holiday in Gran Canaria, you can stay in the neighboring countries.

The New Year's Eve of  Playa del InglΓ©s and Maspalomas is a good alternative if you do not find an accommodation in the southwest area of Gran Canaria. The Maspalomas beach is wide but windy and colder than Puerto Rico, Amadores and Puerto de Mogan beaches BUT from Maspalomas you can get to these beaches by bus or car, just 10-15 km away.
